Christmas, a religious celebration which along with worship for some of us, we now associate with socialising, eating, drinking, gifting, and general merriment, in ABUNDANCE.
In clinic, there has been one word voiced time and time again over the last week… ‘overwhelm’, because whilst we love all the joys that this time of year brings with it, we can’t help but feel a little, well, overwhelmed at times.
Let’s get back to where we’re happiest, science.
Simply Psychology declares that emotional overwhelm occurs when stress exceeds your ability to cope. And this feeling of being “flooded” is more common, than you may realise… Mental Health UK report that over 70% of us admit to feeling overwhelmed at some point in the last year and with its strong links to stress, anxiety and depression, overwhelm should be kept in check.
Stress is the body’s natural response to feeling threatened or put in a position which feels unmanageable, and so when you’re living in a time of go, go, go, the feelings of overwhelm can only increase.
As we’ve explained, stress is a natural response, it’s something which in years gone by, kept us alive, as part of our survival arsenal to evade tigers and other such predators. These days however, our nervous systems are on high-alert and therefore the stress signal is somewhat disproportionate to what we’re in fact experiencing.
Whilst our clinic is open for the majority of December and reopens in January, and as you know, is well furnished with all of the best technology the world has for calming a dysregulated mind, we’ve also put together this list of ways to cope over the next few weeks of what can feel like, chaos.
Breath – Breathing techniques are a great way to calm the nervous system and interrupt any unhelpful feelings of stress or overwhelm Talk – Sharing how you’re feeling can give an emotional release allowing you to process what’s going on in your life Gain Perspective – Whether that’s taking a walk or moving into a new space or position. Movement activates the vagus nerve moving you from fight or flight to safety.
Perhaps you’re not so comfortable in social circumstances and suffer with social anxiety. With all that Christmas asks of us, it can be tricky to keep “showing up”.
Christmas should be a time for enjoyment, and whilst it’s understandable and completely natural to feel a little busy during this busy month, if those feelings creep in more and more and you decide you need more than just a tip or two, we’re ready to listen.
We have numerous science-based non-invasive technologies which will help to centre you, calm and re-regulate you once more from our Near Infra-Red Biomodulation to our Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP).
Contact the clinic today to hear more about how we can help you now or into the new year.
