Are the effects of Neurofeedback permanent?
Benefits are usually long lasting provided we train to stability. Neurofeedback can make your brain more resilient to life events, but your brain is not immune to physical or emotional insults which can have a detrimental effect on function.
Can I do Neurofeedback at home?
It is not possible to undertake Infra Low Neurofeedback at home due to the expense of the amplifier and the need for close observation of the client by the therapist during the session. Simple remote Neurofeedback systems are beginning to come into clinical practice, and we always explore new technologies to enable us to help people who are unable to undertake in-clinic training.
Some of the systems we use can be undertaken at home with remote supervision e.g., Vielight Photobiomodulation; the SSP and the Focus programmes from the Integrated Listening System.
Can I undertake Neurofeedback when I am on medication?
Yes. We do not interfere with your prescribed medication. It is important that there is no significant change to you medication or dosage during therapy, so we have a stable platform. It is possible that the benefits of Neurofeedback may result in you needing a lower dose of medication – in this case we ask you to engage with your Doctor to discuss making adjustments. The only medication we encourage you to stop during therapy are the stimulant medications for ADHD as we would anticipate training will mean you no longer require this medication.
Can the NHS or private health insurance cover the costs of Neurofeedback?
Unfortunately, not currently.
Do I need a diagnosis to benefit from Neurofeedback? Does it matter of I have more than one diagnosis?
Diagnosis is not important to us, and we do not make or refute a diagnosis. We are only interested in the constellation of symptoms or functional difficulties that you are experiencing and how they relate to your brain function from our current understanding of neuroscience.
Do I need a referral from my GP or Consultant?
No referral is required. Just telephone or email us to organise a chat.
Do I need to make any changes in my lifestyle during Neurofeedback training?
We encourage clients or parents to reflect on general optimal lifestyle changes alongside training e.g., attention to sleep hygiene, good nutrition, and physical exercise which underpin good physical and mental health.
Does Neurofeedback always work?
In most cases, there is a reduction in presenting symptoms or functional difficulties. However, Neurofeedback is not a magic wand, and it takes time to promote better regulation and stability in the brain. It is essential that the client wants to engage with us in a positive therapeutic relationship and that we work together as a team to get the best outcome possible. Open communication is critical to enable us to evolve the best protocol possible. There might be occasions when we recommend other therapies or interventions before starting with Neurofeedback to ensure we get the best possible outcomes in the most efficient time frame e.g., the Safe and Sound Protocol; Vielight Photobiomodulation; Dietary sensitivity testing and gut healing when indicated. Occasionally hormonal or endocrine issues may need to be addressed which could potentially inhibit response to Neurofeedback – we can suggest a referral route if you wish.
How do I get started?
The first step is to email us or call to schedule a free discussion with one of our therapists. We recommend that you then spend some time reading through our website and if you wish to proceed, we can schedule an appointment for an assessment.
How many sessions will I need?
This is very difficult to predict until we have more specific information. At a minimum, we recommend 20 one-hour sessions to achieve stability.
Generally, the majority of issues will respond well in 20-40 sessions.
Significant neurodevelopmental disorders e. g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, may take longer to achieve significant gains.
Seizure disorders will require maintenance sessions alongside anti-epileptic medication to achieve optimal stability.
Neurodegenerative disorders will require ongoing sessions to maintain gains and improvements in quality of life, but the degeneration will eventually override the benefits of Neurofeedback.
How old does a child need to be to engage with Neurofeedback?
The youngest child we have ever worked with is 3 years old, although it is possible to train babies with Infra Low Neurofeedback. In young children, we rely on parental observation and feedback post session as well as our observations of the child in session.
Is Neurofeedback beneficial for everyone?
Neurofeedback can help to reduce symptomatic or functional difficulties, but it is also beneficial for Peak Performance training and general cognitive brightening.
There are a few caveats to this:
- Clients with seizure disorder must be under the care of a Neurologist and be on the best possible anti-epileptic medication. Neurofeedback can promote greater stability and reduce seizure frequency, but it is supplementary to medication.
- Clients who have certain eye conditions e.g., squint and /or lazy eye syndrome (Amblyopia) may potentially be a contraindication for certain forms of Neurofeedback. We can directly refer to a highly skilled Orthoptist who can advise when required.
Is Neurofeedback safe/ Are there any side-effects?
Neurofeedback is safe provided clinicians are appropriately trained in the relevant neuroscience and specifically in the platform they utilise. It is also critical that there is an effective therapeutic relationship between clients and/ or parents and therapist to enable us to deliver the best possible outcome.
There may be bumps in the road and symptoms may temporarily get worse before they get better. It is critical that this is communicated to us so we can adjust the protocol appropriately and get back on track in a positive trajectory.
Is there any clinical evidence supporting the use of Neurotherapy?
Yes, Plenty! Click here for scientific literature available.
What are the different types of Neurofeedback?
There are many different Neurofeedback platforms and approaches e.g., single channel EEG band training; 19 Channel QEEG guided LORETA training; Bi-polar training; Infra Low training; Neuromodulation/ or Neurostimulation approaches. We utilise, in our opinion, the most effective suite of therapeutic approaches. available to date. We constantly strive to ensure we remain up to date with advances in this rapidly developing therapy.
What are your qualifications?
We have all been fully trained in all the platforms we use, most commonly by the leaders in that field or technology. We have undertaken all of our training with experienced clinicians in the USA or mainland Europe. In addition, we continue to undertake CPD on a regular basis and engage in peer mentorship and discussion groups to ensure we continue to deliver therapy at the leading edge of the field.
What happens during an assessment?
The assessment takes a total of two hours. The first 30 minutes is spent chatting so we can gain an understanding of the issues. We then undertake the EEG which again takes about 30 minutes to apply the cap, gain a good impedance and record 5 minutes with the eyes open and 5 minutes with the eyes closed. We then process the raw data to generate the quantitative maps and discuss the findings and correlation with symptoms and functional difficulties. Finally, we make recommendations for therapy with us or externally if indicated.
In young children, it may not be possible to undertake an EEG, or we may only be able to achieve eyes open recording. It is not a painful procedure, but it does require reasonable compliance. A QEEG gives us an additional layer of information but does not preclude the ability to undertake Neurofeedback training as the approach we use is based upon the arousal model and is not dictated by the QEEG.
What is Neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to learn – skills/ knowledge/ behaviour. Unfortunately, the brain can also learn to get into bad patterns of behaviour or emotion because of life experiences and events. Neurofeedback helps the brain to get back on track and learn to function optimally.
What is the frequency of sessions required How long does a session last?
Ideally, we prefer to undertake two 1-hour sessions per week for the first 20 sessions. i.e. a period of 10 weeks. We rarely agree to less than this frequency as we need consistent repetition at the start to achieve gains. We will occasionally agree to more intensive programmes but only if we feel are confident of the therapeutic relationship and ability of the client or parent to feedback the response to sessions to enable us to evolve protocols effectively. The absolute maximum frequency at which we would agree to deliver session is one session daily, 3 to 4 times per week.
