The Focus System

What is ILS?

The Integrated Listening system is a multi-sensory, do-at-home programme which combines listening, movement and visual tracking. These systems are vital to our ability to learn, concentrate, process information and coordinate movement. We offer different programs to help different conditions requiring a commitment of an hour a day 5 times a week for anything from 8 to 12 weeks. It involves listening to classical music with bone conduction headphones while completing physical and/or visual exercise.

How does it work?

ILS is designed to help with the reflexive (automatic) sensory integration we need everyday – for example when in class copying down the what the teacher is saying, we combine auditory, visual, fine motor and vestibular functions.

The simultaneous multi-sensory components of ILS’s listening, movement and/or visual activity stimulate the vestibular system (which governs our sense of balance) and the auditory system. Exercising these systemno-imags simultaneously is a holistic approach. Apart from being fun to do, the program creates neural connections and trains our brain to process and integrate multi-sensory input.

Using a variety of filters, a library of music in the programs have certain frequencies removed, with others left in, to enhance listening and perception. This frequency filtration system allows us to effectively train parts of the auditory spectrum.

The movement elements maximize the consolidation and integration of gains from auditory retraining.

The Music

The program offers a classical repertoire (which research shows plays a role in brain organisation) includes Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, Strauss, Beethoven and Gregorian Chants (including female scholae – for music aficionados!).

Benefits of ILS

The program results in an improvement in concentration, cognitive skills like reading and writing, visual and auditory processing, and coordination. It reduces anxiety and stress and improves processing speed, energy, self-confidence, mood and behaviour. Benefits may be seen within the first few weeks but may take months to get established. This is because new neural pathways take a while to develop. Generally physical and mental abilities improve in a few weeks followed by performance in school.

The Sensory- Motor Protocol

Involving 60 one hour sessions over 12 weeks, this is the longest of all ILS protocols and can be repeated as often as desired. You may take breaks of upto 2 weeks after sessions 30 and 50. It is greatly helpful with those who are sensitive to sound and struggling with sensory integration, motor planning and language acquisition. Clients on the Autistic Spectrum and those with developmental disorders are most benefited from this protocol. It combines lower frequency auditory training which engages the sensory motor system and mid-range frequencies helping with communication.

Concentration and Attention

The 40 one-hour sessions over 8 weeks are focused on improving attention and concentration. This program blends low range sensory motor frequencies with higher range mental alertness frequencies. It also stimulates the speech and language centre and improves the understanding and interpretation of different sounds. This program will most benefit those with learning challenges related to reading, writing, auditory processing and memory. It involves first an introductory sensory motor phase (from the sensory motor protocol detailed above) followed by an emphasis on language. The sound frequencies stimulate the speech and language centre and improve the understanding and interpretation of different sounds. The program specifically helps with decoding, phonics, auditory processing, sequencing, and speed of processing.

Reading and Auditory Processing

This program will most benefit those with learning challenges related to reading, writing, auditory processing and memory. It involves first an introductory sensory motor phase (from the sensory motor protocol detailed above) followed by an emphasis on language. The sound frequencies stimulate the speech and language centre and improve the understanding and interpretation of different sounds. The program specifically helps with decoding, phonics, auditory processing, sequencing, and speed of processing.

Peak Performance training I and II

This protocol involves 24 one-hour-daily sessions, for Parts I and II each, for teens and adults. Higher frequencies are emphasized here for the positive influence on cognition and consciousness tackling emotional blocks to creativity. Clients see results in the emergence of creativity, motivation, inspiration, and productivity.

We also have the capacity to blend and adapt programmes to individualise them for each client for the best outcome.
